Diabetes is not just for people who are overweight. More and more studies have concluded that this disease is actually caused by an autoimmune response. This means that a combination of stress, unhealthy food choices, leaky gut, and a lack of exercise are the real culprits. Of course, along with a genetic predisposition.
If you have a family member or friend who is diabetic, you know how serious the consequences of a poor diet can be.
Type 2 diabetes is when your body’s (your pancreas to be specific) ability to produces the hormone insulin is impaired. This causes an abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates, leading to elevated levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood and urine.
What many people don’t realize is that when your body digests carbohydrates, they become glucose (or sugar) in your bloodstream. If you have noticed a “crash” around 30-60 minutes after a high carbohydrate meal, this is why. Your body is responding to the high amounts of sugar in your blood.
The inability for your body to control sugar levels has a dramatic effect on your organs. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, blindness, heart failure, stroke, and amputations. Aside from enormous complications that lead to a decreased quality of life, diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death among Canadians.
Recent studies have found that diabetes may not just be a metabolic disorder like previously thought. Researchers believe diabetes may an autoimmune disease. The biggest discovery to this is that treating inflammation may actually be a much more effective treatment than the traditional route of treating the blood sugar levels.
Maintaining a diet that is organic, free of GMO’s, and full of anti-inflammatory foods, spices, and herbs is the key to longevity. Although we will all benefit from eating a diet full of nutritious foods that are low in carbohydrates and sugars, a predisposition to diabetes makes this especially important. Eating foods that are high in fiber, that will help with portion control (foods high in protein are more filling). And of course, healthy snacking are all a step in the right direction.
It’s no secret that spices used in ancient recipes are the ones that carry the most health benefits. But did you know that the traditional Indian diet carries the most spices that are linked to a reduction in inflammation, improving blood sugar levels, and a reduction in cholesterol?
The most beneficial spices when it comes to treating inflammation and regulating blood sugar are:
It’s also no coincidence that these are the main spices used in Ki’s Kitchen, with the focus remaining on the preventative care of your body. Diabetes does not always have to mean lifelong insulin dependence. The purpose of Ki’s Kitchen is to help you prevent, manage, and reverse illness.
For some, supplementation is the first route people will take when it comes to introducing spices or herbs into their health regimen. A combination of not knowing how to add these to their diet, or not being open to trying new things can lead to this route. However supplementation can be costly, and is not always necessary. Studies, Doctors, and experience have shown that replacing whole foods with supplements will not provide the nutrition you need. Food is a part of our nutritional system, with our bodies creating a perfect balance to allow the vitamins and minerals do what they need to do to keep us healthy.
The good news is that diabetes does not have to happen to you. Predisposition or not, this is a disease that is preventable. In addition, it is reversible in the beginning stages, and manageable with changes in your diet and activity levels. With traditional methods of treatment through anti inflammatory foods and spices, along with new medical research we can work together to ensure this doesn’t happen to you or your loved ones.
At Ki’s Kitchen, we take the guessing and failed attempts at creating new meals out of the equation. Delicious foods that are high in nutrition, and low in harmful sugars and carbohydrates (and gluten) are prepared and delivered to you.
